About Pet Dental Services

Built on Partnership. Strengthened by Clinical Oversight.

For more than 25 years, Pet Dental Services has worked alongside veterinary hospitals to support preventive dental care within clearly defined clinical boundaries.

Our structured POPD™ (Professional Outpatient Preventive Dentistry) protocol was developed to ensure consistency in patient selection, documentation, referral standards, and clinical technique across every partner location.

All of our technicians are highly trained and Fear Free Certified, ensuring every pet is handled with expertise, compassion, and a deep understanding of stress-free care.

We are the only company in our category to have completed two clinical studies in collaboration with board-certified veterinary dentists — reinforcing our commitment to accountability and defined standards of care.

Clinical direction is led by a dental surgeon specializing in periodontal disease, ensuring that preventive protocols remain aligned with disciplined oral health principles and appropriate escalation when advanced disease is present.

We operate exclusively within licensed veterinary hospitals and under veterinary supervision nationwide. Our role is not to replace anesthetic dentistry, but to complement it.

Healthier Pets, Happier People

For more than 25 years, Pet Dental Services has worked alongside veterinary professionals to advance responsible, preventive dental care for pets. Our approach is grounded in collaboration with veterinary teams and informed by decades of clinical experience, ongoing education, and scientific research.

Pet Dental Services is the leading non-anesthetic dental provider in the United States and the only company in its category to have completed two successful clinical studies in collaboration with board-certified veterinary dentists. This evidence-based foundation informs our standards for patient selection, technique, documentation, and referral—ensuring that safety, clinical judgment, and professional accountability remain central to every service we provide.

Clinical Leadership & Operations

Pet Dental Services is led by a multidisciplinary team that combines operational leadership, clinical expertise, and regional oversight to ensure consistent standards of care and responsible delivery of preventive dental services within veterinary hospitals nationwide.

Melissa Slocum

Field Operations Manager

Melissa joined Pet Dental Services in 2009, bringing with her a rich background in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry. Over the years, she has worked in many areas of animal care—from veterinary technician and groomer to wildlife caretaker—gaining hands-on experience with a wide variety of species.

She lives in Hollywood, Florida, with her partner and their small “zoo” of reptiles, insects, and a Doberman named Zombie. Helping Zombie work through behavioral challenges sparked Melissa’s passion for canine behavioral psychology and deepened her interest in understanding how dogs think, learn, and communicate.

Our Story

Pet Dental Services was founded more than 25 years ago with a simple but important belief: that dental disease should be addressed earlier, thoughtfully, and in partnership with veterinarians. Our founder, Josh Bazavilvazo, recognized an underserved need in animal healthcare for preventive dental care that could be delivered responsibly within veterinary hospitals.

As the organization grew, that founding philosophy deepened. Josh partnered with Mayra Bazavilvazo, a dental surgeon with extensive experience in periodontal disease, prevention, and oral-systemic health, and a lifelong love of animals. Together, they strengthened the clinical foundation of Pet Dental Services by combining veterinary collaboration with advanced dental knowledge—always guided by patient safety, appropriate care, and long-term outcomes.

Today, Pet Dental Services is owned and led by Josh and Mayra as a husband-and-wife leadership team, working bi-coastally between California and Florida while raising their three children. Their shared commitment to prevention, education, and responsible care continues to guide the long-term vision of the organization.

Throughout more than two decades of growth, one principle has remained constant: anesthesia-free dental care must be responsible, evidence-informed, and delivered in partnership with veterinarians. Our story is not one of shortcuts or disruption, but of integration—bringing together clinical oversight, operational experience, and compassion to advance oral health for pets, while maintaining professional accountability at every level.
